‘Spirit of Life’ Gala Raises $3 Million

* City of Hope’s music and entertainment industry chapter honored Al Teller Sept. 4 at Universal Studios with its “Spirit of Life” award at a gala that raised $3 million and was attended by more than 1,500 guests. Proceeds will help establish the Alvin N. Teller Research Fellowship at the City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute.

* American Cancer Society will receive $200,000 raised Aug. 25 at the Ruth Berle Celebrity Golf Classic at La Costa Hotel and Resort in Carlsbad. Proceeds will provide further research, public education and patient services. The tournament was held to raise funds in memory of Milton Berle’s wife, Ruth, who died of cancer in 1989.

* County of Los Angeles Library has announced a gift of $110,000 from the Los Angeles County Public Library Foundation. The gift, received in August, is to fund a major part of the library’s literacy community outreach program.

* UCLA School of Medicine’s Victor Goodhill Ear Research Center in the Division of Head and Neck Surgery received a $25,000 donation from the Hope for Hearing Foundation July 24. The foundation provides funds for research in the field of hearing and balance.

* California Community Foundation, ending its fiscal year June 30, donated more than $11 million to social service organizations in the Los Angeles area, up more than $2 million over last year.
