La Habra’s May Wins His Semifinal in British Amateur
Bob May of La Habra led all the way in defeating Walker Cup teammate David Duval of Ponte Vedra, Fla., 3 and 2, Saturday in the semifinals of the British Amateur Championship.
May won the first hole, then the next seven were halved. He took a 2-up lead with a birdie on the ninth hole and Duval never got closer.
May and Duval helped the U.S. team regain the Walker Cup this month by beating a team of amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland.
May’s opponent in today’s 36-hole round will be Englishman Gary Wolstenholme, who defeated Scotland’s Wilson Bryson, 5 and 4, in the other wind-swept semifinal.
Wolstenholme won six of the first eight holes against Bryson, whose round was marred when his approach shot to the 11th hit a female spectator in the nose.
