Share

Two security guards were assaulted by three young men during a Mexican independence day celebration at a Thousand Oaks church, the Sheriff’s Department reported.

Jesus Vargas, 39, and Geraldo Avila, 20, both of Oxnard, were treated at Los Robles Regional Medical Center for head injuries and released, a nursing supervisor said.

The men were beaten about 10:30 p.m. Saturday by a group of disruptive guests at St. Paschal Baylon Church, Sgt. Will Howe said. The attackers used the guards’ flashlights and batons to beat them, then fled before deputies arrived.

Msgr. Joseph George said the guards tried to intervene after a scuffle over a flag broke out between three unidentified men and a churchgoer. George said he ordered the three out of the church hall.

Police were looking for the three men, but no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon.
