SIMI VALLEY : Decision Delayed on Art Center Funding

Share

The Simi Valley City Council has postponed a decision on whether to use $1.4 million in redevelopment funds to help pay for a $9-million cultural arts center at Moorpark College.

Council members said Monday that they want more time to see if other cities, such as Moorpark or Thousand Oaks, might be willing to share in the cost of building the structure.

They said they were reluctant to commit the $1.4 million until all other funding options had been explored.

The Ventura County Community College District and Simi Valley entered into an agreement in 1985 that set aside a portion of the city’s redevelopment funds to be used for improvements at Moorpark College. So far, the district has gotten $250,000 in redevelopment money from Simi Valley.

Although the college district recently received $7.4 million for the performing arts facility from the state, district officials say they need at least another $1 million to cover the remaining costs of the 400-seat theater.

Officials said that they had hoped construction on the performing arts center could begin as early as next summer, with completion expected in the fall of 1994.
