From Staff and Wire Reports

NHL President John Ziegler says there has been “substantial progress” in talks between owners and players on a new collective bargaining agreement but warned, “There’s still a long way to go.”

Owners and players met in Montreal over the weekend. The old agreement ended at midnight Sunday.

Ziegler acknowledged that a proposal from the owners had been rejected by the players but would not be specific. NHL players have called for abolition of the entry draft and removal of all restrictions on free agency.

The sides agreed to resume negotiations, possibly this weekend.
