Hearings Start Thursday on Christopher Report

A special City Council committee on the Christopher Commission report will begin a series of public hearings this week on six key recommendations for eliminating brutality and racism from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The ad hoc committee’s first hearing, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at City Hall, will deal with a Christopher Commission recommendation that the Police Department expand its community-based policing efforts. Witnesses expected to testify include state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Santa Clarita), a former chief of police in Los Angeles, and Robert Trojanowicz, dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University.

Four more hearings to be scheduled later will cover issues ranging from racism and use of force to recruitment and training policies, said City Councilman Marvin Braude, chairman of the committee.
