Herazo Finishes 2nd Twice in Walking Races

Victoria Herazo of Newhall finished second in a 10-kilometer walking race in Washington, D. C., on Sunday as part of an international grand prix series.

Herazo, 32, timed 46 minutes 53 seconds to place second behind Lynn Weik (46:40) of Suffolk, N.Y. A week earlier, Herazo finished second to Debbie Lawrence of Parkside, Wis., in a 5K race in Hamden, Conn., timing 22:39 to Lawrence’s 22:23.

Lawrence, Weik and Herazo competed for the U. S. team in the World track and field championships in Tokyo last month, finishing 19th, 25th, and 27th, respectively, in the 10K walk.

The Pierce College women’s volleyball team will play Golden West, the defending state champion, in a season opener at Golden West tonight at 7. Pierce, 16-2 last season, is led by All-Western State Conference players Lori Mertes and Stephanie Burns.

Registration for the American Roundball Corp. basketball clinic will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Hollywood High boys’ gymnasium. Players aged 7 to 14 are eligible.
