RELIGION NOTES / DAYE CLARK : Salvadoran Fiesta Planned at Unitarian Church

A Salvadoran fiesta takes place today at the Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church. A Salvadoran dinner will be served and a peace network video will be shown.

Proceeds for the 6:30 p.m. fiesta will go to an El Salvadoran women’s project. Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for children. The church is in Costa Mesa at 1259 Victoria St. Information: (714) 646-4652.

An open house is being held today at Temple Beth Tikvah in Fullerton. All unaffiliated singles, couples and families are invited to tour the facility and ask questions. Activities are planned for the children.

The musical group Triumphant Revue from Azusa Pacific University will give a Christian music concert Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove. This is the first in a series of concerts.

Cub Scout Pack 270 invites the public to a barbecue Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Garden Grove. Sponsored by the church, the Scouts have planned a menu of hamburgers or hot dogs, salad, potato salad, chips, soda or coffee. Tickets are $2.50 per person at the door.

Political activist Sabina Virgo is the guest speaker Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Church of Orange County in Anaheim.

Small fellowship groups are now forming at the Irvine Presbyterian Church. These groups meet for a couple of hours one evening a week for Bible study, prayer, fellowship and mutual encouragement. Singles, couples, members and non-members are welcome to join a group.

Also at the church, “Old Testament Characters” is the topic for the morning session of the Fall Women’s Bible Study Group. The 12-week series meets Wednesdays from 9 to 11:15 a.m. The evening Women’s Bible Study meets on Mondays from 7:15 to 9 p.m. The topic is, “The Creator My Confidant, Developing Intimacy with God through the Psalms.” Cost of the women’s Bible study is $15 and free child care is available at the church, 5 Meadowbrook, Irvine. The Adult Education Department at St. Mark Presbyterian Church has planned a class to study the human sexuality report by the Presbyterian Church. The report is called Keeping Body and Soul Together: Sexuality, Spirituality and Social Justice.

Presentations of the chapters will be given at 10:50 a.m. each Sunday after worship. The class meets each week until Oct. 20.

South County Chabad Jewish Center begins the celebration of Sukkot on Monday. The synagogue has built a large Sukkah for the entire Jewish community. Everyone is welcome, regardless of affiliation.

The class begins Tuesday and meets every other week until Nov. 5, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the parish education building. Licensed family counselor Pat Allen is the guest speaker for the first class with the topic: “Communication Skills Within the Family.”

Future topics are: “What Does the Real ‘90s Family Look Like?”; “Family Values in a Changing World,” and “Promoting Self-Esteem, Your Gift to Those You Love.”

The Young Adult Group’s guest speaker Tuesday is Father Don Romito. His topic will be “A Catholic Response to Fundamentalism.”

Romito is a campus minister and teaches Catholicism and religious studies at Cal State Fullerton. He is also associate pastor at St. Juliana’s parish in Fullerton.
