NEWPORT BEACH : All Wheels May Be Barred on Boardwalk

The City Council on Monday will consider a temporary ban on bicycles, skateboards and skates on Oceanfront Walk on weekends and on other peak days, allowing only pedestrians along the popular boardwalk at those times.

The proposed prohibition comes one month after the city was required to pay a pedestrian $270,000 in damages after the man and a bicyclist collided on the boardwalk. An Orange County Superior Court jury held that the area was dangerous because it was too narrow to handle the amount of traffic generated during peak hours.

The prohibition would stretch for most of the length of the walk, from F Street to 36th Street, and would allow only pedestrians on the boardwalk during weekends, holidays and in the summer season, June 1 to Sept. 15.

But the plan would still allow bicycles, skates and skateboards during weekdays. The city is considering the ban as a temporary measure until the walk can be properly prepaired.
