Favored Scan beat Sea Cadet by 1 3/4 lengths and broke the track record in winning the $300,000 Pegasus Handicap at the Meadowlands on Friday night.

Scan, beating seven other 3-year-olds, was timed in 1:48 2/5 for 1 1/8 miles.

Scan and Sea Cadet, running neck and neck, had fractions of 22 3/5, 45, 1:09 and 1:34.

Scan’s trainer, Sandy Shulhofer, trained two other Pegasus winners, Cryptoclearance in 1987 and World Appeal in 1983.

Scan paid $5, $2.80 and $2.40, Sea Cadet returned $3.40 and $2.40, Sultry Song $3.

Much had been expected of Scan coming into this year. The Mr. Prospector colt won three of five starts as a 2-year-old, including the Cowdin and Remsen stakes, but didn’t run back to form this year. His bests were three seconds and two thirds before winning the Jerome Handicap on Sept. 2.
