Thieves raided a parked van Tuesday and made off with 31 dozen jerseys purchased for underprivileged youths participating in a Watts soccer league, authorities said.

The jerseys, worth about $1,400, were purchased by the Watts Friendship Sports League, a nonprofit organization started in 1991 with the assistance of Los Angeles police and the Housing Authority.

Two league volunteers returning from a printer with the shirts had stopped for lunch near the Memorial Coliseum about 1:15 p.m. when someone broke through a rear window and made off with several large boxes containing the shirts.

Witnesses told the volunteers their van was being burglarized, but not before the thief drove off. Even so, police got a description and license number of the vehicle.
