High Life : A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Foothill Teen Wins Poster Prize

Joyce Hwang of Foothill High School in Santa Ana recently took second place in the Knights of Pythias’ national poster contest, held annually to increase community awareness to the problems of drug and alcohol abuse.

Hwang, who previously won the Tustin Lodge’s local contest, represented the state with her poster at the national judging competition in Las Vegas. Her prizes totaled $1,100 in U.S. Savings Bonds. Michael Kritsch of Winchester, Ind., was the national winner.

The 1992 poster contest is under way and open to all students in grades nine through 12. For information regarding the rules and how to enter, contact contest chairman John Bradley at (714) 531-6340. The theme is “The Hazard of Drugs and Alcohol Abuse.”

The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization founded in 1864 in Washington and chartered by an act of Congress. Its members are dedicated to the principles of friendship, charity and benevolence. In California, they support children’s charities, a youth camp in the Sierra and the Children’s Welfare Foundation.

New Kids on the Block, the pop singing group from Boston, heads the list of Forbes magazine’s 40 highest-paid entertainers. The young men will make an estimated $115 million over this year and last.

The rankings, which found Bill Cosby ($113 million) dropping from the top to No. 2, were published in the magazine’s Sept. 30 issue. The earnings are based on Forbes’ estimate of gross earnings for 1990 and ’91.

Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey ($80 million) ranked third, followed by Madonna ($63 million), Michael Jackson ($60 million) and actor/director Kevin Costner ($59 million).

Rounding out the Top 10 were Johnny Carson, the Rolling Stones, “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz and director Steven Spielberg.

Of those on Forbes’ Top 40 list, 18 made their fortunes in the music business.
