Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, a national organization made famous by former President Jimmy Carter, repainted the Pacoima Senior Citizens Multi-Purpose Center on Saturday.

The group arrived at 7:30 a.m. and painted until about 5 p.m.

“We had about 100 people painting and about 50 senior citizens who brought food. We repainted the entire senior center and the outside, too,” senior center Director Alicia Duncan said.

The volunteers also repainted the local offices of Head Start and the Women, Infants and Children food program located at the same site, Duncan said.

“We really needed to have the place repainted, but the city Department of Aging didn’t have enough money, so these volunteers came with 1,000 gallons of paint and did the job for us,” Duncan said.

Habitat for Humanity is based in Americus, Ga., about 150 miles southwest of Atlanta. Founded 15 years ago, it has become well known for using volunteer labor and donated material to build homes for low-income people.

Jeff Traintime, a board member of the Habitat for Humanity’s local branch for the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, said the group hopes to build some low-income housing in the San Fernando Valley in the near future.
