SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Chris Gadomski figured if you can’t join them, beat them. As it turned out, Gadomski lost to them.

Gadomski, who attended Moorpark College as a freshman, transferred to Valley this year and ran into his old teammates Saturday night.

It was not a happy reunion for the former Raider. Although Gadomski completed 11 of 19 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown, Moorpark scored on its first five possessions and thumped Valley, 44-28, in a Western State Conference opener at Valley.

The man who won the Moorpark quarterback job, Corey Tucker, had a big night as well, completing seven of 11 for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Tucker also scored on runs of 16 and two yards.

Tucker’s favorite target was Curtis Marsh, who caught four passes for 136 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown.

Moorpark (2-0, 1-0 in conference play), piled up 465 yards, including 271 on the ground. Three Raiders--Jamal Anderson (78 yards), Tucker (77) and Terrence Thomas (58)--rushed for more than 50 yards.

Moorpark led, 23-14, at halftime and broke the game open with two third-period touchdowns. Tucker’s two-yard run and Andrew Petroski’s kick put the Raiders ahead, 30-14, and Tucker hooked up with Marsh on a 49-yard pass with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Gadomski gave Valley hope when he tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Wrangell Melendres as the third period ended, but Moorpark countered with Reuben Allen’s three-yard touchdown run and went ahead, 44-21, with 13 minutes 24 seconds left in the game.

The Raiders drove 76 yards in eight plays on the first series, scoring on Tucker’s 16-yard keeper.

Moorpark stopped Valley, then scored again. This time Tucker did it through the air, rolling out and tossing a five-yard pass to Tim Blakely. Petroski’s kick put the Raiders ahead, 14-0, and Petroski added a 31-yard field goal nine seconds into the second period to give Moorpark a 17-0 lead.

Valley revved up its offense in the second period. The Monarchs marched 70 yards in 10 plays, Terrance Brown capping it with a five-yard touchdown run.
