Off-Duty Officer Shoots, Wounds Motorist
An off-duty Long Beach police officer driving through the city shot and wounded a motorist in the shoulder during an argument near Ward Street and Slater Avenue, police reported Sunday.
Authorities said the motorist was shot once with a pistol about 11:35 a.m. Saturday, then drove himself to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition later that day.
Police declined to release details of the incident or the names of the officer, the wounded driver or the hospital. The cause of the traffic confrontation was also not disclosed.
No arrests have been made, but Fountain Valley police and the Orange County district attorney’s office are investigating the incident.
The Long Beach officer was identified only as a corporal in his 40s with more than 20 years on the job. He faces the possibility of being assigned to desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
