COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Passing Game Passed Over

Share

Relying on a productive running game to overpower Oregon Saturday night in the second half of its 30-14 victory at Eugene, Ore., USC all but abandoned its passing game.

Quarterback Reggie Perry threw only four passes in the second half, completing two for six yards, and the Trojans finished with 74 yards passing, their fewest since Sept. 28, 1985, when they passed for 68 yards in a 24-0 loss to Arizona State.

It was only the second time in 53 games under Coach Larry Smith that the Trojans had passed for fewer than 100 yards. The last time they failed to do so was on Nov. 14, 1987, when they passed for 90 yards in a 12-10 victory over Arizona.

For the record: USC’s six-game road winning streak was not interrupted by a 17-16 loss to Michigan State in the John Hancock Bowl, which was played at a neutral site.
