Brown’s Remarks
In response to Assembly Speaker Willie Brown’s comments on redistricting (Part A, Sept. 20): As a third-generation American Jew living most of my life on the Westside of Los Angeles, I have rarely, if ever, experienced the kind of anti-Semitism that had been a part of my parents and grandparents’ lives. I have often criticized those of my parents’ generation who find anti-Semitism behind every issue.
But never have I been more insulted and angry than when I read Brown’s comments that “Jewish voters cannot be counted on to vote for black candidates” but instead “ . . . vote for Jewish last names . . . regardless of position on issues.” The arrogance and political stupidity of Brown’s statements alienate his liberal-progressive support and smack of the kind of anti-Semitism becoming more and more apparent in today’s political climate.
