COUNTYWIDE : Redistricting Plan Gets Final Approval
- Share via
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday gave final approval to a redistricting plan that adds thousands of Latinos to Supervisor John K. Flynn’s Oxnard-area district.
The ordinance, which received preliminary approval at last Tuesday’s meeting, will divide the county’s 669,000 residents almost equally among five districts. Redrawing district boundaries is required once a decade to reflect population shifts recorded by the U.S. census.
Most affected was Flynn’s district, in which about 53% of the voting-age population is Latino. The plan meets the key demands of a Latino voter-rights coalition, which threatened to sue the county if the new boundaries fragmented the voting strength of the Latino community.
