Wachs Sets Up Hot Line for Gay Job Bias Victims

Responding to Gov. Pete Wilson’s recent veto of a gay rights bill, Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs announced the creation of a telephone hot line for people who believe that they are victims of discrimination based on sexual orientation.
“The number is (213) 621-2437,” Wachs said at a news conference. “All complaints will be immediately forwarded to the city attorney’s office for prompt action.” Wachs also called for tough enforcement of the city’s 12-year-old gay rights ordinance, which bans sexual discrimination in employment, housing, business and education. “Despite the governor’s cowardly veto of AB 101,” Wachs said, “discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal in Los Angeles and tough action will be taken against anyone who tries it.”
The ordinance--one of the most stringent of its kind in the nation--provides for actual and punitive damages, legal fees and court costs.
