Borland Hails Court Brief: Borland International Inc. said federal officials support the software maker’s contention that it did not infringe on the copyright of Lotus Development Corp.’s popular 1-2-3 spreadsheet. Lotus is suing Borland in federal court to defend the computer program, which has more than 14 million users and has been central to the success of the Cambridge, Mass.-based software leader. Borland said a brief filed on behalf of the U.S. Copyright Office supports its position that its Quattro Pro spreadsheet program does not infringe on Lotus 1-2-3. Lotus said it was confident that it would win the case and accused Borland of misrepresenting the brief.
