A woman believed distraught because of a divorce proceeding shot her estranged husband in their back yard, police said Wednesday.

Sandra May Galvan, 32, was arrested without incident Tuesday night in the couple’s East Maybury Street home, Police Lt. Ed Tunstill said.

She was accused of shooting Steven Galvan, 41, twice in the upper torso after he arrived Tuesday night to work around the house. Sandy Galvan has been living alone since their June 25 separation.

Steven Galvan remained in stable condition Wednesday night in Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

“We don’t know exactly what the motive was,” Tunstill said. “We haven’t been able to talk to him,” he said, and Sandy Galvan is “not saying much.”

She fired at least four times with a .38-caliber handgun, Tunstill said.

Neighbors who heard the gunshots about 7 p.m. Tuesday called police, who found Steven Galvan lying in the yard. Sandy Galvan was arrested without incident, Tunstill said, and a gun was confiscated.

Sandy Galvan was being held on $250,000 bail in Orange County Jail. Arraignment will be scheduled by Friday in Central Municipal Court in Santa Ana.
