Mother of Man, 19, Slain by Deputies Files Suit

The mother of a 19-year-old man slain by a sheriff’s deputy Aug. 3 at the Ramona Gardens housing project in East Los Angeles filed a wrongful death suit Wednesday.

Arturo Jimenez was attending a birthday party when he was gunned down by Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Mann.

In her suit, Elva Jimenez alleges that Mann and his partner, Dana Ellison, “previously utilized excessive use of force on members of the public” and lied to cover up their actions. Her attorney, R. Samuel Paz, told reporters that Mann opened fire after Arturo Jimenez asked the officer why he had knocked another youth to the ground. “‘Why did you hit him? You had no right to hit him,”’ the attorney quoted Jimenez as saying. The Sheriff’s Department has said Jimenez was shot after he assaulted Mann’s partner with a beer bottle, took his flashlight, began swinging it and ignored an order to return it.
