Westside : 2 Dymally Aides Fined

Share

Two aides to Democratic U.S. Rep. Mervyn M. Dymally of Compton--Kenneth Orduna and Lonnie Sanders--were fined a total of $187,500 by the California Fair Political Practices Commission in a case that grew out of Orduna’s unsuccessful campaign for the Los Angeles City Council.

The fine was the second largest ever issued by the commission.

The case stemmed from Orduna’s 1987 campaign for the City Council’s 10th District seat, which was won by Nate Holden. The 10th District is centered in the Crenshaw area and extends west into parts of Fairfax, Palms and Beverlywood.

The commission charged that Orduna and Sanders, who served as Orduna’s campaign treasurer, were guilty of 134 campaign law violations that included the laundering and under-reporting of donations to skirt a contribution limit of $500 per person per election.

Commission Chairman Ben Davidian said the case involved some of “the most serious and flagrant violations of the Political Reform Act” the panel has encountered.
