Board Kills Roberts Ranch Plan

Share

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has blocked a bid to build the controversial Roberts Ranch project, a proposed residential and commercial development on 714 acres in the Cleveland National Forest near Descanso.

The board voted, 4 to 1, to reject developer Julie Dillon’s proposal for 125 estate-size homes of 4 to 11 acres each and a commercial strip at the intersection of Interstate 8 and California 79. Board Chairman John MacDonald was the lone dissenter in the decision.

Environmentalists and preservationists had bitterly opposed the project, saying they wanted the lands preserved for public use.

By declining to alter the zoning for the area, which allows parcels of 4 to 8 acres, Dillon could theoretically bring back a revised development project for approval.

The board has been hearing testimony on zoning changes for the entire Central Mountain region and is scheduled to vote on new regulations soon.
