In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Woodbridge 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Nicole Quinn had 17 kills and No. 10 Woodbridge defeated No. 4 Capistrano Valley, 11-15, 15-7, 16-14, 16-14.

El Modena 3, Valencia 1--Marni Hichborn had 13 kills and Lynnette Anderson had 12 for El Modena (7-1). Melizza Benitez had 47 assists for the Vanguards. Amy Tamblyn had 23 kills for Valencia (4-1) and Brandy Smerko added 20.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

Canyon 27, El Modena 29--In the second mile, sophomore Kim Nelson pulled away from a pack of three El Modena runners and led Canyon (3-0) to the victory at Irvine Park.

In Freeway League girls’ cross-country:

Sonora 27, Sunny Hills 30--Carrie Garritson of Sunny Hills won, but Stephanie Johnson, Trashawn Banford and Jodie Fister finished third, fourth and fifth to lead Sonora in the Freeway League opener.

In South Coast League girls’ cross-country:

Irvine 18, San Clemente 43--Sophomore Jennifer Gillis won in 17 minutes 45 seconds to lead Irvine, which took the first three spots at Irvine High School. Junior Kelly Roda was second in 18:12.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

El Modena 11, Villa Park 7--Brandi Freudenberg swept her sets and is 24-0 this season for El Modena (7-1, 2-0). In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Esperanza 11, Cypress 7--Esperanza (5-3, 1-1) won seven sets in doubles, led by a sweep from the No. 1 team of Helen Ji and Molly Shen, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1.

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

Pacifica 11, Santiago 7--No. 1 singles player Grace Fu swept, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, for host Pacifica (6-1, 3-1). Fu, a senior, now has won 115 consecutive sets since her sophomore season, a streak that includes 16 doubles sets she won as a sophomore.

In the Villa Park water polo tournament:

Costa Mesa 9, Edison 7--Sam Grayeli scored five goals and Julian Popov had two for Costa Mesa (6-4) in the first round of the tournament. Chris Avitia had five saves. Edison is 6-6.

In the San Luis Obispo water polo tournament:

Brea-Olinda 9, San Luis Obispo 3--Bill Brown and Bruyan Noyes each scored three goals for Brea-Olinda (9-2), ranked sixth in the Southern Section Division 2-A, in the first round of the tournament.
