MOORPARK : Council Votes to Raise Parking Fines

Share

Parking illegally in Moorpark may become much more expensive soon.

The City Council voted this week to raise fines from $12 to $30 for most parking violations.

If a county committee approves the higher fines, they probably will go into effect by the end of November, Ventura County Sheriff’s Lt. Geoff Dean said.

Moorpark has not increased its parking fines since it became a city in 1983, management analyst Donald P. Reynolds Jr. said.

City officials recently discovered that drivers who are caught parking illegally pay far lower fines in Moorpark than in some neighboring cities.

For example, drivers whose vehicles are found double-parked or blocking a driveway are fined $12 in Moorpark, compared to $25 in Oxnard and $30 in Simi Valley, according to Moorpark documents. In Thousand Oaks, the fine for double-parking is $12, while blocking a driveway draws a fine of $27.

The Moorpark Council approved increasing parking fines to $30 for all violations except parking in a space reserved for the handicapped. That fine would increase from $100 to $105.

Drivers who are caught parking in zones reserved for the handicapped are fined $100 in Simi Valley and Oxnard and $102 in Thousand Oaks.
