Rookie quarterback Brad Goebel, signed this season as a free agent, will get his first NFL start Sunday for the Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) against the Buccaneers (0-5) at Tampa Bay.

No. 1 quarterback Randall Cunningham is sidelined for the season and backup Jim McMahon is expected to sit out until at least Oct. 24 because of injuries.

“To have a free agent make a ballclub, that’s big news in itself. And then to have one start, I never would have expected it,” said Goebel, the all-time leader in passes and completions at Baylor.

Coach Rich Kotite picked Goebel over Pat Ryan, the veteran who went four for 14 for 24 yards after McMahon was injured in a 23-0 loss Monday night in Washington.

Blair Kiel will start at quarterback Sunday in place of the injured Don Majkowski when the Green Bay Packers play the Dallas Cowboys in Milwaukee.

Majkowski suffered an injured left shoulder last week against the Rams.

What originally was thought to be a bruise on the left knee of Albert Lewis, a cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been diagnosed as a torn ligament, Lewis said. He is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks.
