Orange Overcomes Penalties to Beat Western, 10-7

Share

Despite being assessed several penalties, Orange had little trouble defeating Western, 10-7, in a nonleague game Friday night at Fred Kelly Stadium.

Orange (2-1-1) amassed 110 yards in penalties in a game in which the Panthers hurt themselves more than Western did.

With Orange leading, 3-0, Western (0-4) scored its only touchdown after Orange was penalized twice on one play, once for illegal use of hands and again for a dead-ball foul. The resulting 25-yard penalty moved the ball to Orange’s 15-yard line. Halfback Jason Covarrubias carried for 14 yards on the next play and then Shane Foss scored from the one. Covarrubias’ conversion was good, giving Western a 7-3 lead.

Despite the penalties, Orange scored the game-winning touchdown after Western’s Chester Calderon fumbled on the 39-yard line and Orange’s Nathaniel White recovered. Noah Kimbwala, who was eight for 19 with 107 yards and two interceptions, gave the ball to sophomore tailback Jamie Worthem for the 15-yard scoring run four plays later.
