Singles competition began Saturday, and the triples competition will be held Friday in Long Beach. Five parks in Orange County will host doubles play today through Thursday.

A play in the nationally televised baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Oakland A’s on Sept. 14 was of special interest to St. Paul High School. In a close play at the plate, A’s second baseman Mike Gallego threw to catcher Jamie Quirk, who tagged out Eddie Zosky of the Blue Jays. All three played at St. Paul. Quirk graduated in 1972, Gallego in 1978 and Zosky in 1986.
