Instead of champagne, red ink was flowing in the offices of the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants.
The A’s finished their first non-championship year since 1987 with a $5-million operating loss, despite the second-highest home attendance figures in the team’s 24-year history in Oakland.
The Giants had a sub-.500 record on the field and a sub-zero showing on the balance sheet, the team’s first unprofitable season since 1986.
