Student Pilot Unhurt in Van Nuys Plane Crash

A flying school plane piloted by a student practicing takeoffs and landings crashed Wednesday at Van Nuys Airport.

Ryoko Uyana, 18, was not injured in the 2:13 p.m. crash, airport officials said. The Cessna 152 she was flying had an undetermined amount of damage, according to executives of the Million Air Flight School.

Uyana was flying alone when the plane “had a very hard landing,” veered off the runway and flipped over, said David Voelker, chief pilot for the flight school. It was not her first solo flight, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident, a board spokeswoman said.
