Coppola’s Restored ‘Godfather III’

Share

This week’s recent releases include:

“The Godfather Part III” (Paramount, no list price, R). If Francis Ford Coppola’s nearly three-hour concluding chapter to the Corleone saga wasn’t long enough for you when it played in theaters last year, you’ll be happy to learn that the director has restored nine minutes of footage to this video version. A superb cast includes Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire and Andy Garcia.

“Madonna: Truth or Dare” (LIVE, $92.95, R). Alex Keshishian’s cameras follow the pop star around in a documentary whose appeal will depend on just how much interest you have in the Material Girl’s backstage banter, boyfriend-at-the-time (Warren Beatty) and vapid music.

“One Good Cop” (Hollywood, $92.95, R). An honest policeman (Michael Keaton) tries to care for his dead partner’s three daughters.

Vintage Video: Two Hollywood oldies from MGM/UA ($19.98 each):

“The Horn Blows at Midnight” (1945) is a delightful comedy-fantasy in which an angel (Jack Benny) is sent to Earth on New Year’s Eve to destroy the planet with a blow of his horn--if two fallen angels don’t distract him from his task, that is.

“Men of Boys Town” (1941). Yes, they had sequels back in the ‘40s, too--this one a follow-up to “Boys Town” that doesn’t match up, despite the presence of Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney.

And four foreign films from Connoisseur:

“The Italian Straw Hat” (1927). Rene Clair’s delightful silent comedy ($29.95).

“Insect Woman” (1963). Shohei Imamura’s drama about a country woman who becomes a madam in Tokyo ($79.95).

“L’Amore” (1948). Roberto Rossellini film whose two parts (“The Human Voice,” “The Miracle”) both star Anna Magnani ($59.95).

“Salut L’Artiste” (1974). Light comedy about two actors (Marcello Mastroianni, Jean Rochefort) directed by Yves Robert, who made “The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe”) two years earlier ($79.95).

Other Releases: “Tom & Jerry’s ‘The Night Before Christmas’ ” (MGM/UA, $12.95) brings together four Yule-themed cartoons starring the famous cat and mouse.
