A jury convicted a Lakeside man Thursday of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his neighbor, with whom he had a dispute over a fence.

After a day of deliberating, the San Diego Superior Court jury found William Lawrence Gough, 54, guilty in the Sept. 8, 1990, shooting of Phillip Manlove, 31.

Gough, who had been free on a $50,000 bail bond, was taken into custody immediately after the verdict. Judge Richard Murphy set sentencing for Nov. 7.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Les Dubow said Gough could receive a state prison term of 20 years to life, plus eight years for having prior convictions for robbery and auto theft.

Gough testified earlier this week that he and Manlove argued over Gough’s fence being struck three or four times by Manlove’s truck.

Manlove followed Gough into his house, where, Gough said, he fired a warning shot into the sofa. Manlove went outside, and Gough shot him in the chest after he had left his yard.

Gough’s attorney said Gough was drunk.

It is the second case to come to trial in the last six months involving someone charged with killing a neighbor over a fence dispute. Irineo Jose Cabrales, 54, of Chula Vista, is awaiting a retrial following a mistrial in his murder case in the March 12 shooting of Isaac Drinnon, 35.
