PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Montana Shoulder Not Good, Either

A doctor who examined Joe Montana’s elbow also found an unstable and weakened shoulder that might hinder the San Francisco quarterback’s attempt at a comeback next season.

“There are some problems with his shoulder,” said Ben Kibler, the attending physician for the U.S. Tennis Assn. who examined Montana on Tuesday. “He could get by with it with a good elbow. Now that his elbow is not 100%”

A torn tendon to Montana’s right elbow was reattached in a 90-minute procedure Wednesday night by Michael Dillingham, the team physician.

Dillingham said the surgery was technically successful and said there is “a good chance” Montana will play again.

Pittsburgh quarterback Bubby Brister said he is “100% sure” he will play next Monday night against the New York Giants, despite a sprained right knee. . . . Eric Swann, who became a first-round draft choice of the Phoenix Cardinals despite not having played college football, will start at right defensive end Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
