Birtcher Patent Upheld: Birtcher Medical Systems Inc. said a Colorado jury has upheld its patent on an electrosurgical device used in surgery to stop bleeding. Birtcher had contended in a suit that Denver-based Beacon Laboratories Inc. had infringed on its patent by marketing a similar device. Beacon countersued, saying the patent was too broad. According to Irvine-based Birtcher, the U.S. District Court jury found Birtcher’s patent valid, thus rejecting Beacon’s attempt to limit the patent’s scope. It also found, however, that Beacon had not knowingly infringed on the patent and declined to award damages.
