Girl, 3, Dies After Jumping Out of Car
A 3-year-old girl was killed Sunday afternoon when she jumped out of a car that started rolling backward in a driveway, and was run over, authorities said.
The girl was identified by the San Diego County medical examiner’s office as Veronica Riki Sanchez, who lived in the 4100 block of Delta Street in San Diego.
Investigator John Armendariz of the medical examiner’s office said the girl was sitting in the passenger seat of a car that was parked in a driveway in the 3700 block of Acacia Street when the gearshift was released from park into neutral by an 18-month-old boy who was sitting behind the steering wheel.
As the car started rolling backward down the driveway, the girl tried to jump clear, but was run over by the right front wheel, Armendariz said.
The victim’s mother drove her to Paradise Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
