SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Funeral services will be held Friday for Bo Shim Yee, wife of community leader Henry Yee.

Bo Yee, who was born in China, died Thursday in Beijing, where she and her husband were visiting as guests of the Chinese government. She was 64.

Friends of the family said they do not know the cause of her death, and Henry Yee is not due back from China until later this week. Bo Yee had a history of medical problems, including diabetes and hypertension, but it is not known whether those ailments contributed to her death, a family member said.

While in Beijing, the Yees were making arrangements to help build a classroom at a school, said Steve Schwartz, the Yees’ son-in-law.

Schwartz described her as “the behind-the-scenes backbone” of the Yee family, raising six daughters and supporting her husband in his various endeavors.

Henry Yee, an accountant, has served on a variety of local, state and federal commissions on accounting issues. He currently sits on a federal accounting and management committee, to which he was appointed by President Bush. Former Gov. George Deukmejian appointed Yee to the state accounting board, on which he served as vice president and a member.

The Yees have lived in Huntington Beach for more than 25 years, Schwartz said. All six of their daughters graduated from Huntington Beach Union High School District schools.

Funeral services for Bo Yee are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Rose Hills Memorial Park chapel in Whittier.

The Yee family is asking that donations be sent to the Bo Yee Fund, which will help a series of planned projects, including building a senior citizens center for Asians. Donations may be mailed to the Yee residence at 16312 Wishing Well Lane, Huntington Beach, Calif. 92647.
