Dimitri Kvartalnov’s language skills have translated better on the ice than off.

The Russian-born left wing scored his fifth goal in the past three games as the Gulls took a 2-1 International Hockey League victory from Phoenix Tuesday night.

The victory, in front of 3,293 at Veteran Memorial Coliseum, was the Gulls’ second consecutive and equaled their victory output in Phoenix last season, where they lost 11 of 12 games.

The Gulls wrap up their six-game road trip, the longest of the season, with a game Thursday night in Phoenix before returning to San Diego for a two-game series against Peoria.

Kvartalnov scored at 12:40 in the first period before the Roadrunners tied it at 2:43 in the second period on a goal by Ross Wilson. Robbie Nichols and Len Hackborn assisted on Kvartalnov’s goal. Hackorn has scored a point in each of the Gulls’ seven games.

Soren True, who hadn’t been heard of since opening night, when he scored twice, scored the winning goal at 17:09 in the second.
