Derek King now has the fastest hat-trick stick in New York Islander history.

But all it meant for his team was a chance to blow a four-goal lead in the third period at New York, where Mario Lemieux led a Pittsburgh comeback with a hat trick of his own and Phil Bourque scored 2:30 into overtime to cap the 7-6 Penguin victory Tuesday night.

King set an Islander record with three goals in 78 seconds of the first period, surpassing Denis Potvin’s previous mark of 3:21, set Oct. 14, 1978.

King’s hat trick and Lemieux’s first goal accounted for the first-period scoring.

In the second period, Brad Lauer scored shorthanded and David Volek scored at even strength to give the Islanders a 5-1 lead. Bob Errey made it 5-2, and then New York’s Randy Wood and Pittsburgh’s Mark Recchi traded early third-period goals nine seconds apart.

Then it was Pittsburgh’s turn to score quickly. Lemieux scored two of three goals in a 2:26 span to complete the 27th hat trick of his career, and Jaromir Jagr tied the score with a breakaway goal with 8:17 remaining in regulation.

Detroit 3, Edmonton 1--Shawn Burr’s second-period goal broke a 1-1 tie, and Tim Cheveldae stopped 18 of 19 shots at Detroit as the Red Wings won their first game of the season.

The Red Wings were the last of the 22 NHL teams to record a victory, as they had managed only a tie in their first four games.

The Oilers scored first on a shorthanded goal when Esa Tikkanen intercepted a Steve Chiasson pass and scored at 6:31 of the second period.

Less than a minute later, though, the Red Wings scored on a power play. Steve Yzerman had the puck in front of Oiler goalie Bill Ranford, when Bob Probert swiped at it. Probert hit Yzerman’s stick, sending the puck shooting across the goal mouth, off Edmonton defenseman Jeff Beukeboom’s leg and into the net. Yzerman was given credit for the goal, his second, at 7:17.

St. Louis 5, Toronto 1--Vincent Riendeau stopped 37 shots and Rich Sutter set up two first-period goals as the Blues won their third in a row at home and handed the Maple Leafs their third consecutive loss.

Riendeau was strong in his first action since opening night, when he gave up four goals in 1 1/2 periods against New Jersey before being pulled. Toronto outshot the Blues, 19-8, in the first period, but trailed, 2-1.

Sutter fed Garth Butcher for a breakaway and passed to Gino Cavallini for an easy tap-in to get the Blues off to a fast start.

Five St. Louis players scored a goal apiece against Maple Leaf goaltender Grant Fuhr, who shut out the Blues Oct. 10 in Toronto. Fuhr stopped 19 shots before being replaced by Jeff Reese after Ron Sutter scored on a rebound to make it 5-1 at 6:27 of the third period.

Calgary 6, Minnesota 3--Carey Wilson’s power-play goal broke a 3-3 tie with a little under seven minutes remaining at Calgary as the Flames handed the North Stars their first loss of the season.

Wilson lifted a rebound of Gary Suter’s shot over Minnesota goaltender Darcy Wakaluk and Marc Habscheid scored less than three minutes later to make it 5-3.

Gary Roberts closed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 25 seconds left. Calgary’s Mike Vernon stopped 31 shots, and Wakaluk turned aside 29.
