A volunteer committee dedicated to keeping city youths out of gangs and in school has received a prestigious award for its efforts.
The Commission for South Gate Youth received the 1991 Governor’s Crime Prevention Award for “outstanding service, leadership and excellence in crime prevention.”
The commission was formed two years ago by Police Chief Ron George. Made up of parents, business leaders, teachers, ministers and others, the commission targets children ages 13 and younger who may be susceptible to gangs and drugs as a result of problems at home or school.
The commission runs various youth activities, including Teen Town, a once-a-month party in South Gate Park with dancing, games and swimming.
The award is the third honor the commission has received for its programs.
