A man was killed Wednesday outside a Pomona apartment when he shot himself in the chest, then aimed his gun at police officers and was shot by the officers, authorities said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was shot several times, according to sheriff’s homicide investigators, who were asked by Pomona police to assist in the investigation.

Authorities said police received a report Wednesday afternoon that a man had a gun in an apartment in the 800 block of Reeves Place. After police arrived, a man emerged from the apartment with a .25-caliber semiautomatic weapon and shot himself in the chest before turning the gun toward the approaching officers, police said. Police fired several shots, according to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman, and the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, died at the scene. No one else was hurt.
