A 16-year-old boy has been identified as the assailant in the gang-related shooting of a teen-ager in Vista Wednesday afternoon, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Thursday.

Two others arrested in connection with the confrontation, a 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old Lorell Gilpen, were released after an investigation, Sheriff’s Deputy Pearl Janulewicz said.

Daniel Rosas, 19, was shot in the neck when five youths confronted him as he was driving north in the 1500 block of Bonair Road in Vista.

According to Janulewicz, Rosas left his car, but was pushed back in. Witnesses believe that three shots were fired from a handgun, one of which struck Rosas in the neck. He was discharged Thursday from UC San Diego Medical Center after surgery.

The youth who fired the shots was booked into Juvenile Hall on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, Janulewicz said. His name was withheld because of his age.

Sheriff’s Department investigators attributed the shooting to tension between the Vista Homeboy street gang and the West Side Crips, an Oceanside gang.
