Fourth-Quarter Score Leads Western Past Anaheim
Western High School quarterback Brandon Brennan’s 19-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jason Diaz helped the previously winless Pioneers upset Anaheim, 7-3, in an Orange League game Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
The Pioneers (1-5, 1-0 in league) stunned their cross-town rivals after running back Jason Covarrubias thew a 36-yard pass to wide receiver David Diaz on the Anaheim 19-yard line. Two plays later, Brennan, subbing for starter Errick Bryan in the second half, hit Jason Diaz with the go-ahead score with 6 minutes 4 seconds left in the game. Covarrubias kicked the conversion.
Anaheim (2-4, 0-1) dominated the first half behind the running of Che Garcia, who finished the game with 118 yards in 22 carries.
But two long drives stalled and the Colonists had to settle for Alex Perez’s 21-yard field goal despite outgaining the Pioneers 142 yards to 64 yards in the first half.
