PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Denies Report on Schroeder

Although ESPN reported that the Raiders have considered benching quarterback Jay Schroeder three times this season, including during last Sunday’s 23-20 overtime victory at Seattle, Coach Art Shell said he never considered replacing Schroeder with rookie Todd Marinovich.

Since Marinovich is designated as the third quarterback, Schroeder and backup Vince Evans would have to be injured in order for Marinovich to play, Shell said.

Schroeder has faced the Rams only once. In 1986, while with the Washington Redskins, Schroeder passed for 90 yards and one touchdown in a 19-7 wild-card playoff victory over the Rams. . . . Five Raiders played for Ram Coach John Robinson at USC--running back Marcus Allen, safety Ronnie Lott, linebacker Riki Ellison, quarterback Vince Evans and center Don Mosebar.
