Johnson Gains 233 Yards, but Troy Prevails

Despite allowing 233 yards rushing and three touchdowns to La Habra’s Jason Johnson, Troy won its first game of the year, 21-20, in the Freeway League opener for both teams Friday at Fullerton District Stadium.

Troy scored the winning touchdown with 4 minutes 20 seconds left in the game. Quarterback Brent Locher threw a 13-yard pass to running back Robert Ruzzi for the score and Mark Lowe kicked the extra point for the Warriors (1-4-1, 1-0 in league).

La Habra started its final drive at its own 13. Quarterback Grant Mitchell completed a 30-yard pass to Matt Moreno, but Mitchell missed on his next three passes and was forced out of bounds as the game ended.

Johnson scored on the third play of the first quarter to give La Habra a 6-0 lead. Troy’s Locher had scoring passes of eight and seven yards to put the Warriors ahead, 14-6.

Johnson scored on a 46-yard run with 7:55 left in the third quarter, but the two-point run attempt failed and Troy led, 14-12.

La Habra went ahead, 20-14, when Johnson scored from a yard out and Mitchell completed a two-point conversion pass to Moreno with 7:47 left in the game.
