Welling Earns Ninth Shutout in UCSD Victory

The UC San Diego women’s soccer team recorded its ninth shutout of the season, 2-0, over visiting Cal State San Bernardino in a nonconference game Saturday. The Tritons’ shutouts have all been credited to goalie Jenelle Welling, who had three saves.

Katy Dulock scored UCSD’s first goal unassisted and Cheryl Parker scored the second on an assist from Heather Sears. UCSD, ranked third in Division III, improved to 11-0-1 and avenged the only blemish on its record. Earlier, it tied CSSB, 1-1.

Costa Koutropoulos, a freshman midfielder from Australia, scored five minutes, 25 seconds into the game as Southern California College defeated visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s game. PLNC fell to 2-11, 0-3.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The University of San Diego women captured the USD Invitational team title at Morley Field by placing five runners in the top nine. Jennifer McCann was the Toreros’ top finisher, taking fourth in 21:12. USD’s Amy Ledwith, Brigitta Mohleein, Erin Kelly and Wendy Wibbels placed sixth through ninth. USD totaled 34 points, Pepperdine was second with 45 points.

The USD, led by Jeff Ertwine’s 18th-place finish, took fourth with 120 points.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Tenth-ranked New Mexico defeated visiting San Diego State, 8-15, 17-16, 15-7, 15-13. Gracie Schutt led the Aztecs (10-11, 2-2) with 19 kills and four aces. Jennifer Miller added 16 kills and Suzanne Turcott had 16 digs. New Mexico improved to 11-5, 4-0.

Westmont defeated host Point Loma Nazarene, 15-6, 9-15, 15-10, 15-8, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Robin Rabello led PLNC (12-12, 2-6) with 18 kills. Kelly Barnes, a freshman from Granite Hills High, had 12 kills for Westmont (16-5, 5-2), ranked 25th in NAIA.

Portland rallied from a first-game blowout and scored a 7-15, 15-1, 15-10, 15-8 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over visiting University of San Diego. Jennifer Lofftus led USD with 11 kills and Nikki Wallace had 10. USD is 12-10, 2-4; Portland is 12-11, 3-4.

UCSD, ranked No.1 nationally among Division III schools, scored a 15-8, 15-9, 16-14 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Liz Vesanovic led UCSD (19-5) with 17 kills. CSDH dropped to 13-16.

BASKETBALL

A huge turnout of registration has prompted officials to extend the deadline to the day of the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament on Oct. 26-27 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
