Punt returner Kevin Williams was all the offense second-ranked Miami needed Saturday.

Williams had consecutive returns of 63 yards for a touchdown and 44 yards to the one-yard line during a 28-point second quarter that helped the Hurricanes beat Cal State Long Beach, 55-0.

Williams, a sophomore, scored on a school-record, 91-yard punt return a week ago against Penn State.

“He just has a tremendous feel for (returning punts),” Coach Dennis Erickson said.

“It’s a natural thing. It seems like he stops and waits and sees things happen. He has great vision of the field, which all great punt returners have, along with his speed.”

Miami (6-0) scored four touchdowns in a seven-minute span without a first down. At halftime the Hurricanes had six first downs, five touchdowns and a 35-0 lead.

Darryl Williams’ 44-yard interception return of a Mike McCoy pass to the eight set up the first touchdown, and Miami scored one play after Ryan McNeil returned an interception 23 yards to the one.

“I’ve got to work with (the defense) about getting the ball into the end zone,” Erickson joked.

“It really made our offense stay on the field too long. They had to run three plays.”

The Hurricanes gave up 86 yards, 12 rushing. They have given up only four touchdowns in six games.

Miami, which will play top-ranked Florida State at Tallahassee on Nov. 16, has won 12 in a row overall and 42 in a row at the Orange Bowl. The 49ers fell to 1-6 with their 16th consecutive road loss.

“I don’t know how much we got out of that game, to be very honest with you,” Erickson said. “Obviously, they’re struggling.”

Miami’s starters were out of the game midway through the third quarter. Starter Gino Torretta completed seven of 12 passes for 74 yards, 229 fewer than his season average.

The Hurricanes totaled a season-low 290 yards.

“Our defense played well,” 49er Coach Willie Brown said. “What hurt us was the offense and the special teams.”

The game ended with Long Beach at the Miami four. Because of penalties, the 49ers ran two plays after time had expired, but Brown declined to try a field goal.

“What’s the use kicking a field goal?” he said. “Anybody can kick it for three points.”
