OJAI : Officials Investigate Poisoning of 4 Cats

Share

The discovery of four poisoned cats in an Ojai neighborhood has triggered an investigation by officers from the Humane Society of Ventura County.

Officers posted signs Saturday in the Goldenwest area, warning that children and pets may be in danger and asking residents to inspect their yards for poison-laced ground meat.

Jolene Hoffman, director of the Humane Society’s animal shelter in Ojai, said the red-and-white signs were posted after two poisoned cats from a home on Anita Street were brought to the shelter last week. One of the cats died early in the week. The other, discovered Friday, survived after a private veterinarian treated it with medication and a blood transfusion, she said.

The type of poison ingested by the cats has not been determined, although it appears to be an anticoagulant similar to rat poison, Humane Society Officer Jeff Hoffman said. Within the last month, two other cats suspected of being poisoned were found in the neighborhood, he said.

Humane Society officers went door-to-door Friday questioning people in the neighborhood.
