COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Holtz Playing Own Numbers Game

Share

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz, whose team will play USC Saturday at South Bend, Ind., said of the Trojans: “We’ve always had trouble moving the ball against them.”

Not recently, they haven’t.

In five games against USC under Holtz, all of them Notre Dame victories, the Irish averaged 236.8 yards rushing. In games played at South Bend, Notre Dame ran for 351 yards in 1987, 266 in 1989.

He expected more?

Offensive guard Derrick Deese dislocated his elbow in USC’s 24-21 loss to Stanford and will be sidelined three or four weeks. . . . After passing for only one touchdown in its first five games, Stanford passed for three against USC. . . . USC quarterback Reggie Perry, throwing mostly from the pocket for the first time this season, passed for 189 yards in the second half against Stanford, completing 19 of 27 passes.

Notre Dame will be without two starting defensive linemen against USC. Tackles Eric Jones and Bryant Young suffered ankle injuries in Saturday’s 28-15 victory over Air Force at Colorado Springs, Colo. Jones, who broke his right ankle, underwent surgery Sunday and is out for the season. Young, who suffered a cracked ankle bone, is expected to be out about a month.
