Fresno State quarterback Mark Barsotti, the NCAA passing efficiency leader, will be lost to the team for up to six weeks with a broken leg.

Barsotti broke the fibula in his left leg when he was tackled on a 17-yard run during the Bulldogs’ 42-28 victory over New Mexico State at Las Cruces, N.M., Saturday.

At first, he thought the injury was only a bruise and led two more scoring drives before taking himself out when he felt the bone scraping.

Barsotti hopes to be able to play again in four weeks. “I hurt what is probably the fastest-healing bone in the body,” he said.

Barsotti has completed 98 of 155 passes for 1,491 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. He has a 35-5-1 record over four years, the most victories by any quarterback in Fresno State history.

Officials from four bowls, five conferences and Notre Dame met in Miami Beach, Fla., to discuss their new alliance and review potential postseason scenarios.

The alliance, formed in July, includes the Fiesta, Orange, Cotton and Sugar bowls, as well as the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Eight, Southeastern and Southwest conferences.

The Pacific 10 and Western Athletic conferences, who are not in the alliance, also joined the discussions, leaving the Big Ten as the lone league declining to take part.

The arrangement doesn’t take effect until next season.

Proponents say it will simplify the process of determining bowl matchups, delay that process until the end of the regular season and increase the likelihood that the two top-ranked teams will meet each Jan. 1.

A framework is in place for determining postseason lineups in the four bowls, but some details remain to be worked out.
